Blessed Countenance of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam

Quoted below is a portion of the Hadeeth from Shamaa’il-e-Tirmizi regarding the countenance of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, to enable the reader to visualize the features and fix them in his mind.

An intoxicating effect and dignity is associated with beauty, therefore one should focus on these features and then offer the gift of blessings with love and respect.

It is impossible to portray the appearance of the one who is an embodiment of Noor (light), whatever has been conveyed by companions about his holy face can be summarized thus:

  1. The Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was very majestic. Though of medium height, he appeared to dominate any gathering in stature.
  2. His holy face glowed like the full moon. The elegance of his beauty was such that his fair complexion was tinged with a rosy hue, and his cheeks were smooth, transparent and firm.
  3. The Prophet's sallallahu alayhi wasallam hair, which came down to his earlobes, were slightly wavy and parted naturally in the centre.
  4. The Holy Prophet's sallallahu alayhi wasallam forehead was wide and his brows were fine, arched and dense. They were spaced apart, and in between the two was a delicate vein which became pronounced when he became angry.

    Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam never became angry about worldly affairs, nor did he seek revenge for personal matters. Honourable Aa'ishah radhiyallahu anhaa says that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam showed annoyance only when Allah's proclamations were transgressed, and upon which he would ensure retribution.

  6. His eyes were wide and lustrous with long lashes. The pupils were very dark and the whites had streaks of redness in them.
  7. His nose bridge gleamed, creating an impression of conspicuousness.
  8. His mouth was moderately wide and his teeth were small and pearl like. His front teeth had slight gap in the middle through which a ray of brilliance emitted whenever the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam smiled or spoke.
  9. Holy Prophet's sallallahu alayhi wasallam beard was thick and profuse.
  10. Holy Prophet's sallallahu alayhi wasallam neck was delicately formed like a sculptured image. It was neat and had a silvery incandescence.
  11. In Shamaa’il Tirmizi, Honourable Ali radhiyallahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam bore the seal of prophet hood between his shoulders, and with him the succession of prophets concluded. The Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam himself declared: "I am the last prophet. There is no prophet after me".
